Caged bird
Both authors use the metaphor in a comparing way because they are comparing the free bird to a caged bird. Which can also mean they are comparing the white race to the African American race and how their rights aren't equal. In both poems they compare their feelings towards these decisions. They want to be free and have freedom like the white people do. They don't want to be a caged bird anymore.

I totally agree! The poems are not about birds at all. They are about how African Americans and White people do not have the same rights. It should not be that way. I agree that the "bird" in both poems does not want to be "caged", or in other words the slave wants to be free.
